My first Advanced Placement(AP) class was AP Human Geography. At that time, I was a ninth-grader who had just moved into a new city, and I barely knew anyone else. I was incredibly stressed about taking an AP course because I had heard that they were college-level courses. How were 9th-grade students supposed to do college-level work? Sure enough, as I spent more time in the class, I gained more work, primarily in the form of textbook reading. Everything, from the tests to the essays, was challenging. I still had a high grade in that class, but out of all my classes that year, AP Human Geography felt the hardest.

My introduction to AP classes brought my education to a new level. I’d always been a talented student in middle school, getting very good grades in my classes and doing well in my semester exams without much preparation. But starting with AP Human Geography, I began to spend hours at home reading the textbook, reviewing my notecards, and studying for exams with my friends. Fortunately, my hard work paid off and I earned a high score on the exam at the end of the year.

After having taken many AP courses, I’ve been able to learn high-level topics and experience the level of rigor that will help prepare me for college. While most of these courses have been just as or more challenging than that first AP class, I genuinely feel that the difficulty has allowed me to develop my skills, pushing me to better manage my time, write essays, and study. AP classes have allowed me to grow as a student and develop the skills I’ll need in college; skills that’ll not just help me get better grades and complete my work faster, but will also help me to become a mindful individual throughout my life. These attributes are not exclusive to me either, and many others experience the same things through AP classes, so it wouldn’t hurt trying out an AP class to get your understanding of the process, and hopefully take away something new that you wouldn’t have without taking an AP class.
