Stress is an innate part of life, but it can be easily combated with the help of physical activity. As students ourselves we understand the difficulties of managing stress. I can personally attest to the benefits of physical activity, as exercise has truly helped me destress throughout the college application process.

Just going outside on a walk for 20 minutes a day can have incredible effects, as the process promotes  endorphins throughout the body.  Additionally, this allows you to take a break from hectic student life while becoming more positive as a result of increased endorphins. One other easy way to get some physical activity (other than a simple walk) is to do yoga!

Yoga is a great way to relax in an otherwise restless environment. In school this week we’ve been doing yoga in wellness class and it’s nice to just breathe and think. We often forget to take care of ourselves when we are stressed, and doing 20 minutes of yoga can give you some time to think about your body and your mind. If yoga isn’t your thing, go for a quick, upbeat jog that gets those knees high and heart rate up! This is a great example for those needing high energy and more active stimulation!

Not up to do some downward dog or go out for a run? There’s a hundred different options. Physical activity doesn’t have to be difficult, it can be the simplest of things that make the most difference!  Cranking up the music and having a solo-dance party for 10 minutes can do wonders for the brain!  It’s fun and super easy. Your blood will be pumping, and you’ll be getting some “me” time, which we all know can be hard to find when stress takes over all the facets of your daily life.

Sometimes physical activity needs to be more structured and direct to have the desired effect. Going to organized classes that provide a safe, supporting place is a great way to not only initiate physical activity but ensure it’s continuance in the long term.
